Mr. Coffee brewers recalled

More than 600,000 Mr. Coffee single cup brewers are being recalled because of a potential burn hazard.

The units are imported by Jarden Consumer Solutions. The company, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, said Thursday that they are recalling 520,000 units in the U.S. and 80,700 in Canada.

A build-up of steam in the water reservoir can force the brewing chamber open and expel hot coffee grounds and water. Jarden has received 164 reports of the brewing chamber opening due to steam pressure, including about 59 reports in the U.S. and two in Canada of burn injuries to consumers' face, upper torso and hands.

Consumers should contact Jarden at 800-993-8609 for details on getting a free replacement unit.

Birthday Cake Coffee

  White cake with white frosting is my favorite kind of cake and the blue swirled Birthday Cake flavored ice cream is pretty yummy too.  When it comes to coffee, you might not know there are also birthday cake flavored coffee on the market as well!

This morning my mind is on birthdays.  It's my son's birthday in just over a week so I have birthdays on the brain.  It's in honor of him that I decided on a whim, to post about birthday cake flavored coffee!

Although the aroma is like birthday cake, as with most flavored coffee, you usually have to add a touch of sweetness (whether that is a syrup, sugar or sugar-substitute) to bring out the flavor.  I don't like my coffee sweet so I only had a tiny bit - juuuust enough to bring out the flavor without crossing the line to 'sweet'.

I only found 2 available on Amazon this morning to link to - and I've not had the Le Crema brand, but I have had Arbuckle's brand of coffees.

Crisp Days, Cool Nights and Pumpkin Spice Coffee

This morning I sipped my coffee on the back deck as I watched our puppies play in the yard.  There was a chill in the air that hadn't been there in the days and weeks previously and I was thrilled to feel it.  Autumn isn't far away now.  Time to break out some delicious flavored coffee's!

My body only seems to like pumpkin and spice flavored tea's and coffees in the fall and winter.  It's this craving that inspires this mornings post:  Pumpkin Spice Coffee!  Available from many different companies and in many varieties to satisfy those looking for k-cups, whole bean, ground, organic and decaf.

The sweet, creamy flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg make Pumpkin Spice just right for fall's crisper days and cooler nights.

It's a Strawberry Shortcake Coffee Kind of Morning! (Decaf available too!)

Imagine:   Fresh strawberries topped with heavy whipped cream, on yellow cake.

And then you drink it.

Recently, I've been enjoying Strawberry Shortcake coffee.  I found the Dunkin Donuts brand locally, but this morning I made a quick search online to be sure my readers could order this flavorful kind of they wish.  I found a couple brands that carry it - and I hope you'll give it a try!  I add just a touch of Splenda to mine to barely bring out the flavor without making it too sweet.

La Crema Coffee Strawberry Shortcake is a strawberry and vanilla flavored coffee. Contains a sweet and delicious taste.  100 percent Arabica beans.

What I'm Drinking: Barista Prima House Blend for Keurig

  I don't know if everyone does this, but my husband and I will love a certain coffee for a while and then suddenly - not so much.  For whatever reason it just doesn't taste good anymore and we move on to something else.  Right now, we are not growing tired of this one.

For the past few weeks, out of all the styles I keep on hand, we seem to be drawn to this one.  As a matter of fact I have my third hot, freshly brewed up of the morning sitting here in front of me as I type, just teasing me to hurry and finish the post so I can sip and relax.

It's the Barista Prima House Blend;
  • Classically balanced, with a lively splash of citrus, subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate and a well rounded, toasted-nut finish
  • A roasty sweet, supremely satisfying taste evokes all the familiar comforts of your favorite coffeehouse
If you just want to try it out, I'd suggest this one;

If you already know you love it, you can save money by investing in a larger purchase.

Hot Cocoa for Keurig - The One and Only Time I'll Recommend Grove Square Brand

Even though the temperatures are hovering at 100 degree's throughout most of the US anyway, this morning as I went outside on the deck with my morning coffee, there was a chill in the air.  Yes, it's August - and September and October will be here soon!  With them come the sights and scents of Autumn and the time of year when a lot of people start to want to sip hot cocoa (hot chocolate).

Today I'm featuring the Grove Square brand option.  I will never, ever, at any other time recommend you purchase this brand... for coffee.  Why?  Because a few years ago they wanted to capitalize on the k-cup style and rushed to market a very affordable, cheap option.  Sitting right there next to the other k-cups in the store, but on average was $2 - $3 cheaper.  Of course many people would choose it and only briefly think to themselves "Wow, this box feels a little lighter than the others....."   and only realize once they spent the money and got home that they just wasted their money on instant coffee.

Yes, inside the little cups was instant coffee.  If you are ok with drinking the nasty brown stuff that instant is, then why in the world would you invest in a Keurig anyway, right?  You don't need an expensive coffee brewing machine if you are content with instant.  But it was a marketing  scheme to make them oodles of money by unsuspecting shoppers.  So no... I do not recommend you buy their coffee.

But today is about cocoa.  And since cocoa is an instant product anyway and because they do cocoa much better than they do coffee....   it is an affordable option when it comes to brewing a cup of hot chocolate.  I personally prefer Swiss Miss or Green Mountain but I'm not a big fan of hot cocoa or hot chocolate.  However, there are actually people who prefer the Grove Square brand for this drink and for that I'm giving them kudos.

My Personal Coffee Brewer? I use the Keurig Special Edition Model

Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewing System

I bought my first Keurig back in ....  I believe it would have been 2006.  I had had the best tasting cup of coffee EVER at of all places, my car dealership.  It was the fall of 2005, I was waiting for maintenance and embarrassed myself by trying to use their individualized coffee brewing system.  I thought I would have to take the little metal lid off the coffee's before brewing, so of course when I lowered the lid and the water shot into the cup, it went all over the place!   Luckily I was able to very quietly and carefully wipe up my mess, clean the grounds from the counter and try again.

This time I left the lid intact, brewed the coffee and....  wow.  It was truly the best coffee I had tasted.  I went home, looked it up online and told my husband THIS was our next coffee maker.

At the time you couldn't buy them 'anywhere' like you can now.  They were selling them on their website and you could get them for offices and places of business, but they were just starting to sell to the general population.  Luckily, by the time our coffee maker broke and started leaking about 6 months later, Best Buy had started to carry them and we purchased one (with black tie protection) and we have never looked back.  Originally they broke down pretty easily - we've had 4 or 5 now.  But our current model has lasted about 2 or 3 years now with heavy, daily use.  Back around 2009 we had one that only lasted 2 weeks.  But I think they have improved and tweaked a few issues they had earlier because the newer models seem to have a better track record.

From their product description:

The Special Edition Brewing System is our mid-luxury home brewing system that offers a blend of styling and convenient features. The Special Edition features chrome accents, a blue, back lit LCD display and three brew size options.

Programmable features include a Digital Clock, Adjustable Temperature and Auto On/Off. The 48-ounce removable water reservoir holds up to eight cups before refilling and for the removable drip tray allows for easy cleaning and the use of travel mugs.
