Don't automatically shave your head bald to 'support' someone you love with cancer.

I saw this tiny little bit of a longer quote on a site article about what doctor's really think... (link).  When I saw this little blurb I was internally nodding my head... yes yes yes yes and yes.
(In regards to the month of October and the push for everyone to wear pink ribbons...)

"Our patients hate it because they can't go anywhere without being reminded of their disease."
—James C. Salwitz, MD, a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer in East Brunswick, New Jersey

I will try to keep this short and sweet because it's a hot topic for me and I know I could ramble on about this one.  When it comes to 'showing support for' or 'donations for' or 'donating to' or 'fundraising for' or 'drawing attention to'  someone's disease; please make sure they WANT YOU TO.

When it comes to breast cancer the quote from the oncologist above hits the target with the people I personally know that have had this disease.  They HATE OCTOBER BECAUSE EVERYONE IS FRIGGIN' WEARING PINK RIBBONS AND "PINK".   They can't go anywhere or do anything without being able to forget about the breast cancer they have or are fighting.  Many patients hate seeing those pink ribbons, pink shirts and the over the top and in your face 'donation' pushing (example: airlines that hound flyers on EVERY FLIGHT in October to donate to breast cancer research by buying 'pink' martini's or 'pink' lemonade).

Ok but let's move on to the thing I really wanted to mention.

If you are showing 'support' for someone going through chemo and want to shave your head to show them you support them... PLEASE ASK THEM FIRST.

I saw this first hand with well meaning family members when my own Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 51.  While a family member and his 3 young boys were ready to shave their heads to show Grandma they 'support' her in her fight, luckily my Dad got to them and stopped them first.

The LAST THING SHE WANTED TO SEE WHEN SHE LOOKED AT HER BEAUTIFUL GRANDSONS WAS A SHAVED HEAD to remind her that her own head was bald due to the chemo treatment she was going through.  Seeing her grandchildren was a joy and a way to get her mind OFF her disease, OFF her fight.  To be 'normal' and forget everything but the happiness of the moment being with family.  Seeing someone with a shaved bald head in support was actually more emotionally damaging.

Everyone is different.
Some may want to see you with a bald head to match theirs.
Some do not.
Please ask them first.

Update to the TSA Airline Rules Post from Just Two Days Ago...

This morning I flew again and an tiny update to my post just two days ago is in order.

Two weeks ago and again last week I not only was taking off my jacket and shoes to 'bin' them, as well as my scarf, my purse; yada yada...  As I was getting out my laptop I also had to dig out my eReader for the first time ever as they had posted signage everywhere and were warning travelers that any electronic larger than a cell phone had to be removed from luggage and placed in a bin by itself.

In addition to that, they also had signs and were verbally asking about any food products - even ever so tiny - had to removed from your bags and bins.  Those hard candies?  Yep.  That little baggy of trailmix?  That too.  And that smashed granola bar in the front pocket of your bag?  Spill it, sister!

So this morning as I prepared for my flight I was ready!  I had packed, unpacked and repacked so I was utilizing every inch of space but also making it easy to get through TSA security fast... laptop and cords packed separately, eReader easy to grab, protein bar ready to go in front pocket, no other liquids or foods and of course clean socks, purse over puffy outer vest for quick removal and nothing in pockets.  Whew.

I was ready!

And... the signs were gone.

I didn't have to take out my eReader or tablet.  Only the laptop like usual.
And they didn't care about candy, trailmix or granola bars today either.

Well, hmph.  Oh well.

So just a heads up.  Doesn't matter how often you fly; check the latest rules and regulations.  They change often!  What was ok or not ok last week may not be this week.

Rambling over Coffee.... Airlines get ready for new U.S. security rules from Thursday

This morning I got my coffee in hand and sat down to read the news, but a scan of the headlines read like storylines from horror movies.  I just couldn't do it. I found myself already getting frustrated by what our country and world is turning into just by reading the headline and one or two sentence teasers so I checked emails and did other things for a bit.

When I had a second cup of coffee in hand and went back to the news, I went to the Reuters site to scan some headlines and see if there were any I was ready to click on, and I saw we were getting ready for some new rules at the airport.  Again.

This caught my attention because I'm doing a lot of traveling this Fall and I already found 2 'new' rules... wait, actually one airline made me do something else the others never have so maybe "3" new rules just over the last 3 weeks.  I'll get to those in a minute... first is the news story that was the basis for this "... it's just the coffee talking this morning" post.

Airlines get ready for new U.S. security rules from Thursday

WASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - New rules on all U.S.-bound flights take effect on Thursday including stricter passenger screening to comply with government security measures designed to avoid expanding an in-cabin ban on laptops, airlines said Tuesday.

Airlines contacted by Reuters said the new measures, which could include short security interviews with passengers, would be in place by Thursday.

They will affect 325,000 airline passengers on about 2,000 commercial flights arriving daily in the United States, on 180 airlines from 280 airports in 105 countries, and industry trade group Airlines for America has said the changes might cause disruptions.

The U.S. announced the new rules in June to end the government’s restrictions on carry-on electronic devices on planes coming from 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa in response to unspecified security threats.

Those restrictions were lifted in July but the Trump administration said it could reimpose measures on a case by case basis if airlines and airports did not boost security.

You can read the whole story by clicking on the link in the headline.  Anyway!  So that got me thinking about the other small changes I've personally seen over the last 3 weeks.

I flew twice in September and the following items were not required, but when I flew again 3 weeks later, in October they had been implemented and followed for each flight since.

The first tiny change is one I noticed while waiting in line to hand my boarding pass and ID to the first person in the TSA security check.  I noted the little signs they have stationed along the line had changed.  They now read any electronic device larger than a cellphone has to be taken out of your bag and put in a bin for scanning.  That meant my ereader... which is a Samsung Galaxy tablet.  I've never, in 5 years had to take that out before so of course when I had packed this time, it was at the bottom of my bag.  Under the things I knew I DID have to take out, like my laptop.

I commented on this when we were going through.  The TSA worker told me "Yep, that's new. Just came down this week..."

The second surprise was the signage right by the conveyor belt as I was struggling to get to the bottom of my bag to get the ereader out, I read I also had to take out any 'snacks' from my bag.  My mind raced, trying to sort just what they meant by that?  I'm careful to not bring any foods or liquids through - even if they are supposedly allowed, because I just don't want the hassle.  But snacks?  Do they mean the two little protein bars I had thrown in the front pocket of my backpack 'just in case'?

They did.

The sign went on to list even hard candy and trailmix has to be removed and placed in the bin.

Good gracious!

So here I am struggling to move as quickly as humanly possible to slip my shoes off and get them into a bin, get my little purse into a bin, get my laptop out of the backpack, dig out the ereader I didn't expect to have to dig out and now I suddenly had to dig through the little pocket on the pack to take out my two little protein bars.

And then I was stopped and told I had to open my laptop case because I had the power cord "IN" the squishy protective case with the laptop.

What? I've never been asked to do that before either.

She said "you can't have a cord in with the protective case..."

So now I finally get my crap in the bins and rush to take my place in the scanner and 'assume the position...."

And the TSA worker tells me to turn my little tiny cross necklace 'backwards' so it's hanging behind my head instead of in front where a necklace usually sits.

I've never been asked do THAT before either.  And I've worn this tiny little cross necklace daily for about 12 years now.

Well, I made it through all scans just fine after all that hullabaloo but man...   flying sucks.

Music with your Morning Coffee: White Winter Hymnal - Pentatonix (Fleet Foxes Cover)

For the last 3 weeks I just can't get enough of this song... it's a cover of Fleet Foxes and done by Pentatonix.  It's kind of like an ear worm; once it gets into your head, it's hard to get out.

White Winter Hymnal - Pentatonix (Fleet Foxes Cover)

I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied ’round their throats
To keep their little heads
From falling in the snow
And I turned ’round and there you go
And Michael you would fall
And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime

The Cuisinart SS-15 - A 12-Cup Coffee Maker and Single-Serve Brewer

Yesterday I was flipping through a circular that came in the mail from a local store and saw the Cuisinart Coffee Center listed for 199.99.  Because I'm an Amazon affiliate, I always check to see if the same products I find 'interesting' are also available through Amazon and for a cheaper price.  It was!

So this morning's coffee talk is the Cuisinart SS-15 12-Cup Coffee Maker and Single-Serve Brewer and as of this post it is listed on Amazon for approximately $45 less than my local retail store is selling it.  And this listing also ships free so that saves a bundle as well.

Shock Coffee Premium Hyper-Caffeinated Ground Coffee Frac Packs - As Featured on the Today Show

This post is coming to you thanks to a gnat, a baby and traveling.

I am traveling.  Staying at someone's home. There isn't a guest room but I'm bunking on an air mattress in the same room as the baby.  And the first night here, I was suddenly awakened by something 'shifting' in my ear... ?  I flipped to the other side and laid my head back down.  My ear was against the pillow and I felt it again. A shift upwards in my ear.  OMFGosh there is something in my ear!

Well, long story made short, I was positive it was a spider (because in my brain, a brown recluse spider was the obvious first choice of something awful crawling into my ear while I was sleeping) but no, it was a gnat.  A big gnat; but a gnat none-the-less. And I was rescued by waking the homeowner to use a tweezers to pull the 'something' out of my ear...

Needless to say I didn't sleep the rest of the night.  In part due to an ear ache I now had but also thanks to my own over-active brain positive something else must still be in my ear and I was sure there was a line of 'somethings' crawling up the wall, over the pillow, over my hair and into my ear... I just knew it.

So I did not sleep.

Hence; my drinking a gazillion cups of coffee to stay awake yesterday... and the need for some heavily caffeinated brews!

Amazon tells me this is one of the 3 top brands that claim to be the strongest coffees.

It's Blue Wine but it's Not Wine... gik Live - the blue wine out of Spain

This morning I was reading the news when I saw a 'blurb' on the side bar mentioning a blue wine.  That got my attention because... well, blue wine.  I ended up going to the website of Gik Live and learned that the 'wine' is not allowed to be called wine because officially Europe has only 3 options;  red, white and rose'.  So blue is classified under other.

The site had a "Press" section so I delved into it to learn more about this cool looking but odd drink.

"Try to forget everything you know about wine. Try to unlearn the hundreds of protected wine designations of origin, the complex and demanding service standards and everything that sommelier said at a tasting course to which you were invited. Forget traditions and forget that we are speaking about the liquid which represents the blood of Christ at church.
Now open your eyes, what do you see? A sweet and blue drink with 11.5 degrees of alcohol. That’s Gïk. Do you want to try it?"

The blue color of Gïk is  created from a mixture of white and red grapes, which is then added to two organic pigments; indigo and anthocyanin – which comes from the very skin of the grapes used to make wine.
"Our wine comes from different Spanish and Franch vineyards, whose grapes we transform into Gïk. That’s right: we work with grapes from different areas of Europe, whose color and flavor we improve through food tech. We choose these wineries in terms of the people who work them and their innovative nature. That’s why Gïk has no denomination of origin, but a guarantee of quality and unique flavor.

Our wineries are located mainly in La Rioja, Zaragoza and Courthézon."

The Gïk team is made up of young people without any wine tradition. They are in their twenties and have no previous experience. They have no fixed schedules. Their office is worldwide. There are not business people but creators: designers, programmers, artists and musicians. They work without hierarchy; horizontally.

In the end I was not sure what to think.

A bunch of 20-something guys make a blue drink.  Market through word of mouth on the internet.  It's only available to pre-order through their site and no one knows what it tastes like.  I'm not intrigued enough to spend cold hard cash on it myself, but I'm sitting here sipping my third cup of morning coffee and was interested enough to post about it.  Heck, I don't even know if the product really exists outside the marketing and the website.

One thing in the press release information and website mentions they use the skin of grapes and natural indigo to color the wine.  Well, indigo is a natural blue dye of sorts.  So I'm thinking to myself, "I could pour a glass of white wine and add a couple drops of blue food color..."  and I could, except I prefer drinking coffee to wine.

Eh, it's just the coffee talking again.

Just a small vent: I shouldn't have to pay to protect my credit information! It's like information BLACKMAIL.

I jumped on computer to quickly check a couple email accounts before heading off to my next 'to do' on the list.  With all the hacks going on lately with Equifax and everyone else, it now seems like everyone wants to offer "credit watch" reporting and "identity protection"... for a price.  Yearly or monthly - but they all want to offer to protect my credit information for me.

The latest just now was an offer from Windstream - the internet company - who wants to offer me Windstream Shield to monitor my information with packages starting at $8.99 a month.

As I am known for talking out loud to my computer, I did.  I said;  "I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MY CREDIT INFORMATION PROTECTED OR MONITORED!"

It's bad enough credit companies even started to exist; gathering so much information on people in one place - some of which is wrong - and for years they've made you fight tooth and nail, wasting time and money to fight them to get their information CORRECT.  Now it's not only a fight but I have to PAY THEM to PROTECT my OWN personal information that I DON'T EVEN WANT THEM TO HAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Think about that!

They take (steal, borrow, use, gather, buy, trade, collect) all this information on me from my name, address, birthday, social security number, telephone number and cell phone number to my email addresses, my income, my work history, banking history, my bank account numbers, credit card numbers, my mortgage loan information and account numbers, etc. etc. the list goes on!

Things I don't WANT them to know or have in the first place.  Things I did not OFFER to share with them.

But I get NO SAY in the matter.

And then they don't or can't even keep my personal information safe.

And to add salt to the wound, they and every other company want ME to pay $10-15 a MONTH to have them monitor my own information they stole from me?

It's like blackmail.

You steal something of mine and then make me pay you to protect it?

It's just the coffee talking again....  but dang.
Rant over.

Dang... Cindy Crawford and Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner looked like twins!

I was looking for some new furniture for the living room and saw
an ad that featured Cindy Crawford's line.
Only I glanced at the photo and thought it was Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner!
I seriously thought he/she came out with a furniture line until I checked
and sure enough - it said it was a Cindy Crawford line.

Don't these two look absolutely similar!?

Reusable Nespresso Capsules
Refillable Pods For Nespresso Machines (OriginalLine Compatible)

This morning as I was researching information for a different post, I came across Nespresso Capsule Refillable Pods.  I realized I know next-to-nothing about Nespresso products as I am not an owner of their machines.  However, I've spoken at length in the past about refillable pods for other machines, like my Keurig and the iCoffee.  It was time I gave mention and links to this product as well!

Not being an owner of the product, I had to go on the information I found and it seems that it's a likeable product, although the consensus is it's hard to get a strong cup of coffee from them.  Even packed full, the coffee reviews say it's a weaker blend.  I have noticed that with the eco-cups and refillable cups for my Keurig and iCoffee machines as well.  However, when the budget insists for one reason or another that you need to use ground coffee beans and a refillable cup, even a weak coffee is a good coffee when compared to 'no' coffee!

Is it compatible with Nespresso Prodigio

Yes, these capsules are indeed compatible with the Nespresso Prodigio

How do you clean these? I get a caked layer of coffee on the outside edges of the cap and it doesn't come of with water.

Well, you have to keep it fully dried first, scraping carefully with a sharp knife, then using the brush. The problem is not cleaning the pods, it is filling it with the right size of ground coffee snd packing it with the tool provided. Too tight and the steam will not go thorough properly, too loose and you will have nice strong coffee. I guess it will need extensive trial and error. So far I have had the machine for about three weeks and have not reached the right procedure :( see less

Try to let the water run through the opposite way or if your faucet is equipped with a sprayer attachment, I know the sprayer works great for me to remove the grounds out of the lid quickly. Have you tried to use the included brush? The screen lid is designed so grounds do not pass through into your cup of coffee. Also… see more

How much caffeine is in that cup?

This morning I was procrastinating starting on my day and as I stared into my coffee cup, I was thinking about the Kombutcha Green Tea I had bought at the grocery store a couple days for another family member.  In about .4 seconds I had gone from that thought, to green tea, to tea, to black tea to the caffeine content in tea and the difference in the taste between tea and coffee and how much I love coffee but hate tea.  And THAT is how this post was born.

Since I was sitting in front of my computer at the time I popped a quick google search of caffeine content into the search box and the results were some great charts and even images that made it quick and easy.  And... informative!
