Long time readers of It's Just the Coffee Talking know how much I loved (loved, loved, loved...) my old Land Rover Discovery.
It had issues but I loved it anyway. This truck and I were bonded. So, when it finally was breaking down and the parts and upkeep were worth more than the entire thing was worth, I had to say good-bye.
In the end, I seriously considered spending the money to have someone put a new engine in MY truck because it was my truck and no other similar model would be MY truck.
(If you are unfamiliar with this sort of thing, just watch the 'car shopping' episode of the Gilmore Girls in season 7 - I believe. You can find a clip of it on youtube. If it's the longer 5 minute clip, then just skip to the 2:27 time stamp. That was me. Nailed it. And in the end, Luke DID find a 1999 Jeep for Lorelei and DID buy it for her so Gypsy COULD put the engine in her 'old' Jeep... that's love man, that's love.)
But me? Well, I didn't have that option because mine had had an electrical issue that no mechanic in 2 different states could ever find or fix... and I didn't have the money to replace the engine anyway, so I knew it was time. Time to put my baby out to pasture... which is exactly what my new son-in-law told me I should do with it. He told me I needed to park it out in some farmer's old pasture and walk away.
COULD I BUY A NEW ONE?
BECAUSE LAND ROVER STOPPED MAKING THIS STYLE IN 2004.
And do you know what the new 'discoveries' look like?
It's just basically a really expensive freakin' Kia Soul!
I know because the new Land Rover Discover looks just like my Kia Soul.
The cheapest car there was to buy at the time I had to hurry and buy something after I let my poor old Discovery go to the big car lot in the sky and there was NO OTHER VEHICLES I LIKED.
THIS STYLE CAR HAS TO DIE.
Whether you spend 18K or 100K they all
LOOK THE SAME!
I don't care what brand you are buying.
Cheap looks exactly like expensive.
AND NO ONE HAS ANY IMAGINATION.
All SUV's look... like each other.
I want to point out that when looking for a vehicle that resembled my beloved Land Rover Discovery, the Mercedes G-Wagon certainly comes up... but uh, 130K isn't in my budget. And honestly, I don't love it either.
I got REALLY excited when I found out Land Rover was going to bring back the Defender.
OMG SO EXCITED!
The specs all leaned to a similar design as the old Defenders.
Defender fans everywhere so excited because they hadn't been legal to sell in the USA for YEARS and after people in America had bought them overseas and had them shipped here, the government came and confiscated them and they had to sue to try to get them back.
So I waited and they kept putting it off for a couple years so I kept waiting... not investing in a new real vehicle because I was waiting to see if it would resemble the Defender and/or the Discovery....
And then I saw this.
Yep. That same stupid over-done SUV style again.
Might as well buy an 18K Kia Soul or a Mini Cooper.
So now what are car magazines and sites and fans excitedly waiting for?
The NEW BRONCO.
Supposedly, the latest speculation is that it will look something like this.....
And guess what?
This might be (MIGHT be) just similar enough to my old 2003 Discovery that I'd consider buying it.
I can totally see myself doing some cross country desert camping in this baby!
Waiting to see if the car manufacturers are smart enough to break out of the
old, tired, overdone mold and give us back some
in vehicles. Not the same cookie-cutter look for every brand/model under the sun.
Oh, don't mind me... it's just the coffee talking again.
