Rambling Over Coffee: Adults Coloring Through the Pandemic (I watched Friends yesterday while coloring)

The first thing I've colored in years...

Over the past few years I've bought colored pencils and adult color books for two of my young adult kids (one loves everything 'art' and loves to draw, the other needed some stress relief at college)  but I've never cared to purchase any for myself.

Although I've always loved arts, crafts, creativity; it seems my interest and patience rises and falls throughout life and sometimes things are a passion for weeks or even years; other times I can't imagine having to do something I previously enjoyed, and I avoid it like the plague... or a pandemic?  Ha ha.

It's been years... years!... since I've enjoyed coloring in any way, shape or form.

But a couple days ago when I hit up the local Walmart for a grocery run, I made an impromptu right turn down the kids 'crafts' aisle when I caught the words CRAYOLA and saw the wall of crayons and colored pencils.  It was a spur-of-the-moment decision but getting ready to self-isolate in the house again, I just a had urge to pick up colored pencils and see if they had any 'adult' color books on the shelf.

I have seen the adult color books over in the 'book' department of Walmart but I wasn't going to trek all the way back across the store.  No, this was just a spur-of-the-moment thing and I turned into the kids crafts aisle that held glue, crayons, children's crafts, poster board, etc.

There is a very small display of little children's color books and sticker books, which were highly picked over as parents had scrambled to stock up on such while they are sheltering in place with their kiddos right now but sure enough, someone had either put down or left one adult color book there, stuck right in the middle of all the little Paw Patrol and Frozen color books.

While my personality would have loved to find something more akin to this one I saw on Amazon...

"Fuckity fuck fuck fuck" (which is something I've been known to mutter here in real life at the Coffee Haus), for some reason Walmart didn't stock this one in the children's department... go figure!?  Ha ha.

But the one lone little adult color book on the shelf was butterflies (which I hate) and dragonflies (which I used to like until I studied the life cycles of a dragon fly and they totally grossed me out) but that's ok.

Butterflies and dragonflies and birds it is....  so I bought it.

And yesterday, after I finished tasks for the day and had nothing pressing for my attention, I popped in a DVD of Friends (I've posted about them many times since I bought the entire set a couple years ago) and I colored.

Mindlessly colored.  I didn't overthink it.  I watched my laptop playing disk 3 of the 6th season of Friends and just grabbed colored pencils and colored and colored....

At first it was hard.
I've not colored in so many years and I had lost my interest or patience.
I had to make myself to continue to color the first flower and dragonfly but then something happened.
I went into a zone and the coloring became more relaxing instead of stressing.

As Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Joey and Pheebs entertained me and made me smile and chuckle, my fingers and hands colored....

It was nice.
Relaxation set in.
Along with a little finger cramping as they hadn't done this in a long time!  Ha ha.
But yeah, so apparently I've taken up adult coloring now.
At least during this pandemic.
