.....the book I'm reading now is supposedly well-loved, critically acclaimed, and popular to most people but I'm just trying to plow through it. I really don't think it's that great.

Good Morning Coffee Friends!

It's a bit late, and I've had my fill of hot, strong, black coffee and have now moved on to cold but I'm here.

I always tell myself I want to chit-chat about random 'life' topics but somehow all roads lead back to... politics, government and Covid.  And frankly?  I've just had it.  The stupidity, the lies, the lack of common sense and the propaganda is appalling.  Certain people with clout are making billions and billions of dollars by continuing to spread the lies and hype.

It all just gives me a headache.

Instead, I have a completely boring chit-chat... books.   Reading.  And the fact that the book I'm reading now is supposedly well-loved, critically acclaimed, and popular to most people but I'm just trying to plow through it. I really don't think it's that great.

As a matter of fact, once I finally get through the stupid thing I intend to never read it again.

What is the book?  It's The Book Thief.

Over the years I've read a hundred books and stories either telling the tale of the Jews in Nazi Germany, or the Holocaust, or true stories of those that were there - or even fiction set in that time period and I'd almost venture to say every one of them was better than The Book Thief.

I felt as those the writing style was a cop-out.  The story line was good but the author was lazy and didn't want to tell the story, didn't want to have to research details, didn't feel like taking the time to actually write a good book;  instead, use an irritating writing style, lack of punctuation and tell it from a point of view in which you can throw one or two sentences out there and pretend you are being obscure and interesting.  Pretend you are writing it this way and telling the story this way as something different and cool and making the readers 'think' perhaps but in fact, it just really seems rather pretentious and oh-so-lazy.

The Book Thief seems to be a story written start to finish in one day, edited the next day and then published on the third day.

I know it's not a popular opinion to not like The Book Thief but there it is.  I'm a life-long voracious reader who self-taught to read by age 4 and hasn't stopped for a moment since.  I read everything... Everything.  I have to read as much as I have to eat or sleep!

When I was young and poor and couldn't get to the library to refresh my books, didn't have a penny extra to buy any, I used to entertain myself by reading the thesaurus and the dictionary every night before bed.

I will trudge through to the end, but it's still irritating, it could have been written so much better... and I will never read it again.

(PS:  The movie isn't any better.  Some of the actors chosen for the characters were not a good fit... but then again I'm probably in the minority of opinion on that too!  Ha ha.)
