It's Just The Coffee Talking: Advent Calendars

For some reason, I'm in the mood to do an Advent Calendar this year.

I'm not sure which style, I'm not sure what I want to put in it.  I don't know if I want to make something that I'd put a little piece of candy in each day, or a little picture, or....  I just don't know.

But I remember the excitement and joy of childhood where Advent Calendars were concerned.  My mother had a green yarn Christmas Tree she would hang on the wall and there were 25 pieces of candy tied with yarn on it.  My little brothers and I would have to take turns each morning to untie the daily candy pieces.

My Grandmother had a stable made from cardboard that had little numbered doors that opened up to a little image of something "Christmas" or "Nativity" themed underneath.  Even opening the little doors to see the next picture was exciting.

For my own kids, I always tried to have the cardboard scene that covered a chocolate candy mat underneath so each day a little door was opened and a chocolate candy shaped like a Christmas or Nativity image was the daily surprise.  I kept the plastic chocolate molds from two of those, and made my own by recycling it a couple years.

I haven't done an Advent Calendar of any type for a while!  But I'd kind of like to this year.  I think I'm feeling a bit more in the Christmas spirit than I have the past two years that Covid-Craziness took over the planet.  I'm ready for Christmas... ready for traditions... for happiness and joy and love.  Ready for Jesus.  Ready for Christmas decorations.  Ready for family and gift-giving.

Last year I was not in the Christmas spirit.  At.  All.

This year... I think so.

I did a random internet search of crafty Advent calendar ideas....  I still didn't know which kind I want to make though.  Do I want it to have little pieces of a Nativity set to build?  Pieces of candy?  Chocolates?  Little gifts from the dollar store?

But then I made it more difficult because I did a search for Advent Calendars at Amazon.

These are affiliate links, but they are ones I took a second look at and thought were kind of cool....

My son would flip for this one... opening a new mini superhero each day?  YES.

Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar?  I know a number of people would flip for this one... I'm not a big SW fan, but my husband, my best friend and her entire family are, as is another good friend of ours.

THIS, however, I AM a big fan of.  The Office Advent Calendar...  it says each day holds tiny little vinyl figures.  I didn't realize there were enough characters for 24.  Hmmm.  Perhaps they double some?  I'm not sure!

I'm a big Peppa Pig fan since I started to watch it with The Littles about 6 years ago.  Love this one!

To be honest, I'd still like to 'make' a calendar of some sort.  I love this pre-made wooden Advent Calendar in which I could place things in each little drawer... the problem is if it's for myself, that kind of takes the fun out of opening the days.  I would know everything I buy for the little prizes.

I'd let the little guy open them but he's barely into 'toddler' stage from 'baby' and unless I put a fishy cracker in each of the boxes I don't think he's quite old enough for an Advent calendar yet.  However, this and The Office calendars are my favorite ideas so far.
