It's Just the Coffee Talking: Cleaning our rough stone bathroom tiles (mops and swiffers don't work on the rough surfaces) and family members that borrow things you never, ever see again!

Good Morning Friends!

Man, 2022 has been a long, tough year... and it's only January 9th!

So, a random topic as I sip my coffee:  last night I had to place an order for a new hard floor scrubber.

This is like a carpet cleaner, with the brushes and two water reservoirs; one for clean, one dirty, and the machine suctions up the water as you clean your wood, tile, ceramic or linoleum floors.

Note I said 'new'.  And not because mine broke.  It's because almost 3 years ago I lent mine to a family member... and I've never gotten it back!  Ha.

About 2 1/2 years ago they needed to borrow it.  They brought it back but soon asked to borrow it again.  Then they were moving into a new home and wanted to use it there when they moved in.  And then... as I asked for it every 'once in a while' it never made it home but honestly, they used it all the time - especially in their basement as they found their new home had some issues and heavy rains caused their basement to flood.  And they have 3 cats and a dog.  They got a lot of use out of it.

After that I never asked for it back.

I don't want it back!

But I hate cleaning our bathroom floor because it's a rough stone tile and it literally rips up sponge mops.  Microfiber mops catch on the rough surface and you can't actually 'clean' as it just skips and jumps over the bumps and crevices in the tile.  It doesn't rip them to shreds like a regular mop, but it tears up the washable pads pretty quickly and they don't work as well as they do on normal floors, when they are used hard like that.

That bathroom floor has been a source of contention the entire time we've lived in our home.

I've been using the Swiffer on it - but it has to be the simple version with the disposable wipes - not the Swiffer WetMop.  And you have to be careful even with the Swiffer wet/dry because the rough stone tile peels the disposable pad off if you aren't careful - and you go through about 5-7 pads.

But honestly for the past 4-5 years, that has been the best thing to clean that darn floor.  (Cleaning it by hand on hands and knees with a gross dirty bucket of water next to me is horrible and just makes me angry and chews up my finger tips and puts holes in the cloth).

In 2016 (?) I bought this from Best Buy... the Hoover Floormate Deluxe.

And I didn't buy it for the bathroom floor!  I bought it to use on ceramic tile kitchen floor and our hardwood floors.
Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner Machine, Wet Dry Vacuum,

It has a bit of a learning curve because sometimes the suction isn't perfect if you are on a tile floor, because it breaks suction on the uneven surface so you have to turn it off, move it an inch or so and then turn it back on so it will form that suction to suck all the used/dirty water up again but it works well and I could use it on the tile floors as well as our real, hardwood floors.

I figured out later that I could use it on the bathroom floors... although the suction doesn't work great since that rough natural stone doesn't have even one spot that is 'flat' and even; but the fact that it scrubs the floors for me and sucks up a good part of the water is awesome; and I simply throw down a beach towel and 'scooch' it around the floor with my feet to soak up any remaining water in the crevices of the stones.

But then the family member borrowed it and I never saw it again.  ;)

For about 6 months I've been thinking about spending the money to buy a new one but it wasn't in the budget and I couldn't justify it.  (Things are a bit tight right now).  However, last night I was staring at the kitchen tile floor (again) and decided to see if they even SOLD "my" old Hoover FloorMate anymore?

Kind of.

They have a newer 'pet' model out and most of the sites I checked don't have the original in stock but the Hoover website does ($129.99) and a couple other places still sell it at a similar price point.  (129.99 - $159.99).

I was still on the fence so I exited out of the browsers and since I was trying to avoid buying even more things from Amazon - give the other retailers a chance! - I didn't check there on purpose.

But an hour later I just had to know.  I checked Amazon and dangit!  They did it again.  They had 'my' floor scrubber $20 cheaper than the previous best price I found elsewhere.

GAH.  So... yes.  I did.

I ordered it.

It was at a price point I could live with, it's the exact model I already owned so there is no learning curve to it and I will know it inside and out straight out of the box, and frankly - it will get a lot of use.

So that is my random morning chit-chat over coffee.  My new (kind of) hardwood and tile floor scrubber vac.

I'm adding links along with some commentary here.... for those interested.

THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOPS.  Seriously.  I use it daily - so much so that the container of refills literally sits on my side-counter at all times.  I use it for the hardwood floors and the kitchen tile, and it's one of my MUST HAVE AT ALL TIMES products I keep on hand.  I buy the refills at Sam's Club and I love the scent of the disposable wipes.    (This is the one I use in the bathroom as well as it's my favorite so far for the rough stone tiles installed on that floor).

Swiffer Sweeper 2-in-1 Mops for Floor Cleaning, Dry and Wet Multi Surface Floor Cleaner, Sweeping and Mopping Starter Kit, Includes 1 Mop + 19 Refills, 20 Piece Set

This is my SECOND  all-time favorite mop.  I bought one when they first came out - used it until it snapped in half (it was a known defect on the early model because the liquid cleaner rusted at the pressure point and the broke with use - but then they came out with an updated version).  I LOVE this one.  I can use the cleaner I want in the refillable bottles, and the pads are simply tossed into the washing machine and dryer to re-use.  Note: after I snapped the first one because of the liquid rusting at the nozzle pressure point, I just started to pull out the bottle after use, and I set it on the floor next to the mop.  To use it, I just grab the bottle, insert it, use it and then pop it back out to store again.  My current mop is about 4 or 5 years old now and still in perfect condition.  I've even got the original pads yet.

These are my favorite refills for my wet/dry Swiffer mop.  LOVE the scent of these!!!

Swiffer Sweeper Wet Mopping Cloth Multi Surface Refills, Febreze Lavender Scent, 36 count (Packaging May Vary)

This is the Swiffer that I know most people have - but I don't love it.  You have to use their cleaning solution refills, it uses batteries to work, and I hate the sticky, expensive, disposable pads.  I think this is fine for completely flat, not-very-dirty floors with everyday use, especially if you are single or maybe a newlywed and your floors are basically always perfectly clean anyway.  For kids, dogs, dirty floors and any tile floor with grout lines, etc. or texture... I personally don't like this one.

THIS IS THE ONE I OWNED BEFORE... AND JUST BOUGHT AGAIN.   I originally bought it in 2016 I think - and it's still going strong and being used by the family member that 'borrowed' it and I never got it back.  They have 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 kid and a basement faux-hardwood floor tiles that floods with heavy rains.  I don't want it back.  LOL.  But I bought another one last night online for myself as I miss it.

Here is the 'newer' version... I almost bought this one instead of 'mine' but honestly it was about $40 more and things are tight right now in the budget so I went with the original version because of the price.

Whew.  That was a MUCH longer post than I knew I'd write this morning when I sat down with my coffee.

But... whatever.  It's just the coffee talking again.
