Seattle teachers union elects new president under investigation for allegedly abusing autistic student

The Seattle Education Association (SEA) just elected a new president who has been on paid administrative leave since December, under investigation for allegedly physically abusing a special-needs student. The union certified her win anyway.

Ibijoke Idowu, is a special education teacher at Rising Star Elementary School in South Beacon Hill.

The allegations against Idowu come from parents of a third-grade student at Rising Star who has autism, a speech delay, and is partially nonverbal. According to the complaint obtained by the Seattle Times, the family noticed bruises the size of adult fingertips on their son’s arm in October, then again in December. Using visual aids, the boy identified Idowu. A Seattle Police detective’s report described four small bruises on the student’s left upper arm, possibly consistent with fingerprint markings.

A behavioral therapist working inside the classroom also witnessed a second incident, the family’s complaint alleged. She told investigators Idowu threw a marker at the child’s head while he was at a classroom whiteboard in December, and that multiple students in the class were afraid of her. The father of the child told the newspaper his son has struggled emotionally since the alleged incidents and has not wanted to return to school.
