Side note: When JD Vance was announced as running VP I didn't really know anything about him, and didn't care for him simply based on the teeny tiny bit I had seen of him.
Then, he was VP and everyone (media, social media, etc.) was so focused on President Trump, I still didn't know too much about this guy. He wasn't on my radar and life was... insane for me at the time so frankly, I didn't care.
Over the past 2 years though, and especially the past year, I've been paying attention.
And I like what I see. The more I watch him, listen to him and know about him, the more I like him. The more I respect him.
ANYWAY! Pondered this for a hot second over coffee.
At a White House briefing on visa fraud, the vice president said no company has abused the system more than Microsoft. His numbers: about 6,000 American layoffs last year, 6,300 H-1B visas, nearly 3,000 green cards. His line was blunt. For every worker Microsoft cut, it replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants, at wages below what Americans make. The administration suspended Microsoft, Adobe, and six outsourcing firms from the PERM program, the step employers use to sponsor H-1B workers for permanent residency. Existing visas are not revoked. The path to a green card through those companies is frozen.
Microsoft said most of its H-1B filings were extensions for people already on staff, not new hires. Vance is not buying the distinction. You do not lay off Americans and then ask the government to lock in the replacements. American jobs first. The sign behind him said it.
